A
world renowned body of literature from a tiny isolated community
Because of
its unique culture and heritage, The Great Blasket Island is to apply
for World Heritage Site status.
The
islanders' unique way of life and their preservation of the purest form
of Irish is recorded in a large colection of books written by islanders
and visitors to the island.
For such a
small isolated community, no such comparative body of literature exists
anywhere else in the world.
Among the
more well-known are:
“The
Islandman” – Tomás Ó Criothain
“Twenty Years
A Growing” – Maurice O Sullivan
“Peig, My Own
Story” – Peig Sayers
“The Western
Isle” – Robin Flower
"The
Blaskets, Next Parish America" - Joan and Ray Stagles
“The
Blaskets, A Kerry Island Library" – Muiris Mac Conghail
Etc. etc.
An excellent
documentary of island life by Muiris Mac Conghal is presented on the
mainland by an audio and visual show in the Blasket Island Heritage
Centre. This is an excellent place to visit after a trip to the island,
for those who want to learn more about the Blasket Islands and their
unique part in Irelands cultural heritage.
